Subject Information File relates to Michael Andrew Behan’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers and the IRA in the service periods between 23 and 25 April 1916 and between 01 April 1918 and 30 June 1922 during the War of Independence and the Truce period. Michael Andrew Behan states that he was not a member of the Irish Volunteers but took part in the 1916 Easter Rising for two days (24 and 25 April) at outposts at Gibney’s [public house] and Annesley Bridge in Fairview under the command of Leo Henderson (MSP34REF60142). Subject states that he joined F Company, 2 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers in early 1917 under the command of Frank Henderson (MSP34REF230) and Oscar Traynor (MSP34REF236) and took part in the funeral of Tom Ashe (1D313) [1917]; election work in the Clontarf West district; the funeral of Richard Coleman (1D15) [1918] and “preventing exportation of pigs”. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), Michael Andrew Behan states that under the command of Patrick Sweeney (MSP34REF195) and Sean Ward (24SP3377) he took part in armed street patrols. Applicant states that he was arrested by British forces in late 1920 and interned in Collinstown [Aerodrome], Dublin; Arbour Hill, Dublin; Dublin Castle and Ballykinlar Camp [County Down] until release as part of the general amnesty for IRA prisoners under the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War, the subject states that he was attached to an IRA ‘Flying Column’ (Active Service Unit) operating in Blessington and Brittas (both County Wicklow under the command of Gerald Boland (MSP34REF15471).
