Subject Information File relates to Patrick Byrne’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers in the service periods between 01 April 1916 and 31 March 1917. Subject also applied for a 1916 Medal but the outcome is unclear. Patrick Byrne states that he was a member of A Company, 1 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers under the command of Edward Daly (Ned Daly). He claims that was mobilised at 5 Blackhall Street on 24 April 1916, joined the Four Courts Garrison and took part in fighting against British forces in the North Brunswick Street and Church Street area. Subject states that he was active during Easter Week 1916 until 29 April. References state that he escaped arrest at the surrender and was not interned. He gave Liam O’Carroll (MD118), Eamon Morkan (24SP5990) and Bernard Parker (MSP34REF5693) as references who could corroborate his claim. It is noted on file that Patrick Byrne withdrew his application for a service pension in June 1941. File includes references in support of the subject’s claim from Bernard Parker [1941], Liam O’Carroll (Liam Ua Cearbhaill) (1941) and Eamon Morkan (1941). The last item on file reads “Patrick Byrne / Claims Easter Week service in Four Courts area, Dublin and supplies references accordingly / Hold for referee” (18 September 1942).
