Subject Information File relates to John Flynn’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 01 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce Period and Civil War. Subject unsuccessfully applied for service in the periods between February 1917 and 31 March 1920. Flynn was awarded six (6) years for pension purposes at Grade C in 1938 following appeal under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. John Flynn states that he joined Milltown Company, Irish Volunteers in February 1917 under the command of Thomas O’Connor (MSP34REF4798) and took part in training; drilling; route marches and refers to the arrest and imprisonment of four company members for “illegal drilling”. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), the applicant claims that he was attached to A Company (Milltown), 5 Battalion, 1 Kerry Brigade, IRA under the command of Thomas O’Connor and was engaged in capture of arms from Canon King, Milltown Rectory (February 1919); destruction of old Milltown Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Barracks (August 1920); mail raid on train in Castlemaine (September 1920) and attack on lorry of “Black and Tans” (RIC) at Kilderry, Milltown (November 1920). He claims that he joined Brigade Active Service Unit, 1 Kerry Brigade, IRA under P Cahill in late 1920 and took part in attacks on RIC in Killorglin (January, February, March 1921); ambush of “Black and Tans” (RIC) at Lispole, Dingle (late March 1921); ambush of British forces at Glenbeigh Railway Station (26 April 1921) and ambush of “Black and Tans” (RIC) at Ballymacandy, Milltown (01 June 1921). John Flynn states that his unit was re-organised as A Company (Milltown), 6 Battalion, 2 Kerry Brigade, IRA. During the Truce period, he claims that he was promoted to Battalion Police Officer and was engaged in work for the Republican Courts. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War, John Flynn states that under the command of JJ Rice and Con Leary he was in charge of Battalion ASU, 6 Battalion, 2 Kerry Brigade, IRA from 29 June 1922 comprising of 50 men with rifles and two machine guns. He also claims that he appointed Battalion Commandant following wounding of Thomas O’Connor in first week of July 1922. Subject states that he took part in the attack and capture of Listowel (July 1922); attack and capture of Kilmallock Workhouse, County Limerick; the Battle of Limerick City; engagement with National forces at Killorglin, County Kerry (September 1922); attack on Castlemaine Military Barracks, County Kerry (late January 1923) and fight with National Army troops at Derrynafena, Glencar, County Kerry. Applicant states that he evaded arrest and was on the run until summer 1924.
