Subject Information File relates to Michael McCarthy’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Irish Citizen Army in the service periods between 24 April 1916 and 04 May 1916. Michael McCarthy states that he joined the Irish Citizen Army in Dublin in 1914. He claims that he took part in the 1916 Easter Rising from 24 April 1916 under the command of James Connolly (1D178) and took part in fighting at the General Post Office [O’Connell Street]; Phibsboro Railway Bridge and Cabra Road Railway Bridge. Subject states that he was arrested on 27 April 1916 and interned in The Custom House, Dublin until 04 May 1916. He did not claim for any further service and gives references to corroborate as Thomas Foran, Michael Kelly (MSP34REF17898) and Frank Robbins (MSP34REF17899). It is noted on file on 10 June 1939 that the subject “did not attend” his interview with the Advisory Committee. Handwritten note states “Poor Claim” on Form R.18 (observations of service).
