Subject Information File relates to Patrick Joseph Paul's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 June 1922 and with the National Forces for part of the periods between 1 July 1922 and 30 September 1923. Claimed in file that Paul had served in the British army prior to joining the Irish Volunteers in 1919. Paul states in his application for a Special Allowance that he served in the British military forces between 1914 and 1918. Claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers/IRA in 1919 and says that he was appointed Lieutenant, Battalion Officer Commanding (OC) and later Brigade OC. During the War of Independence it is noted in reference that Paul was involved in attacks on British forces at Kill Barracks and [Banmahon] coastguard station. Noted that he also laid in ambush at Whitfield and Tramore. Says that while acting as Brigade OC, Waterford Brigade he received instructions from General Headquarters (GHQ) to amalgamate the two Waterford brigades. Says that following the split in the IRA he was appointed OC Waterford Brigade. States that he enlisted in the National Forces on 31 March 1922 at Beggars Bush Barracks and was discharged on 7 March 1954 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Applicant claimed disability due to stress due to extra duties during the Emergency (Second World War).
