Subject Information FFile relates to Michael O’Sullivan’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period, and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) O’Sullivan states he was Adjutant of F Company (Ferrybank), 1 Battalion, 1 Waterford Brigade. He states he took part in raid for mails, destroyed Waterford Bridge, raided the railway goods stores, raided Barrack Street Post Office (Waterford) and police duty. O’Sullivan claims a large part of Waterford was hostile toward the IRA which made carrying out any military activities more difficulty. During the Truce Period O’Sullivan states he attended training camp in Ballylynch, organised the Company and was then stationed at Dungarvan Barracks. During the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) O’Sullivan took the anti-treaty side and states he fought in the Siege of Waterford, attempted to capture a patrol of National Forces, had a fight in Killongford and a number of other fights throughout the Brigade area stating as Brigade Quartermaster he would join different Active Service Units (ASU/Flying Columns) for operations. O’Sullivan states he was captured on 24 March 1923 and claims was sentenced to death until this was commuted to three years penal servitude. He states he took part in forty one days of hunger striking and was released in July 1924. O’Sullivan was awarded a disability pension of £15 per annum in relation to his stomach trouble which was attributable to his military service.
