Subject Information File relates to John Bernard McDonald's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917 and with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Forces for part or all of the periods between 1 April 1918 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1918. Following his participation in the 1916 Easter Rising John McDonald was interned until August of that year. During the War of Independence McDonald took part in a number of IRA operations in Dublin including: raids for arms and munitions; burning/destruction of British military stores at the North Wall; attack on suspected British intelligence operatives at Mount Street on 21 November 1920 (Bloody Sunday); attack on members of the British forces at the London and North Western Hotel (1921); and the aborted attempt to rescue Kevin Barry prior to his execution in 1920. It is also claimed that McDonald and an unnamed brother of his were involved in the acquisition/importation of arms for the IRA. John McDonald served with the Republican Police during the Truce period and according to Commandant William Byrne also served with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) prior to joining the National Army in October 1922 during the Civil War. He continued to serve with the Defence Forces until his retirement on 2 October 1947 at the rank of Commandant.
