Subject Information File relates to the receipt of awards by Julia O' Connor (Mother) and Helen O'Connor (Sister) under the Army Pensions Act, in respect of Rory O' Connor executed on 8 December 1922 by order of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State. This and the executions the same day of Liam Mellows (DP10200), Richard Barrett and Joseph McKelvey were reprisals for the IRA killing of Sean Hales TD and wounding of Padraic O' Maille TD on 5 December. Rory O' Connor had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in various positions including Officer Commanding IRA forces in Britain and Director of Engineering in General Headquarters of those organisations during the War of Independence. Opposed to the Treaty he served as a member of the IRA Amy Council and General Headquarters and took part in the occupation of the Four Courts. Following the outbreak of the Civil War in June 1922 Rory O' Connor took part in the fighting against National Army forces and was taken prisoner following the capture of the Four Courts in July 1922. He remained in prison until his execution. File includes: signed handwritten statements relating to Rory O' Connor's service/activities and his death from Sean F. Lemass TD (MSP34REF2078), Minister for Industry and Commerce and Oscar Traynor TD (MSP34REF236); material relating to the investigation into the means of Julia and Helen O' Connor and their level of dependency on Rory O' Connor prior to his death; material relating to representations on behalf of Helen O' Connor by Liam Cosgrave TD (1970); and material relating to two (2) brothers of Rory O' Connor as well as two (2) nieces and one (1) nephew - partly closed.
