File relates to Denis Begley's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, Fianna Éireann, the IRA and the National Army for part or all of the various periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service from 1 April 1916 to 31 March 1917.
During the week of 23 to 29 April 1916 subject claims to have mobilised as a member of Charleville Company, Galtee Brigade, Irish Volunteers, transported arms and despatches, been arrested 30 April, released 2 May and rearrested 17 July 1916 and released 24 August 1916. He was again arrested in July 1918 but escaped and went on the run to Dublin. During 1920 and 1921 as well as serving with the Republican Police, Denis Begley claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations including the raid for mail at Rotunda Rink (1920), tying up of member(s) of G Division, Dublin Metropolitan Police at Killarney Parade, Dublin (1920), the attack on suspected British Intelligence agents in Dublin on 21 November 1920 (Bloody Sunday) at Mount Street during which he was wounded, the escape from Kilmainham Jail of Frank Teeling (2 February 1921) and the attack on the London and North Western Hotel, North Wall [April 1921]. He was arrested and interned from 19 May to 8 December 1921. Denis Begley joined the National Army in March 1922 and continued to serve with the Defence Forces until his retirement in March 1929. He then re-joined the Defence Forces during the Emergency (Second World War) serving from [1940] to January 1946.
