Subject Information File relates to Sarah Mellows receipt of an award under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son Liam Mellows executed by order of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State on 8 December 1922 during the Civil War. Liam Mellows served as Officer Commanding Irish Volunteer forces in County Galway during the week of 23 to 29 April 1916. He evaded capture following the surrender, escaped to the United States of America where, as well as undertaking propaganda and organisational work; he assisted in the supply of arms and money to the Irish Volunteers in Ireland. Returning to Ireland in 1920 Liam Mellows worked in the Purchases Department of IRA General Headquarters during the War of Independence becoming Director of Purchases prior to the Truce in July 1921. Opposed to the Anglo Irish Treaty, Mellows fought with the Four Courts Garrison National Army forces at the outbreak of the Civil War in Dublin in June 1922 and was subsequently captured and imprisoned. Mellows execution followed the assassination of Sean Hales TD Sarah Mellows was awarded a Gratuity of £112:10:00 under the Section 12 of the Army Pensions Act, 1932 in July 1941 and awarded an Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts from March 1942 to her death in December 1952. File includes: original handwritten unsigned undated partial torn letter regarding claim in respect of "Liam"; typed copy correspondence between Sarah Mellows and Eamon De Valera regarding her claims addressed to President Eamon de Valera (3 June 1935 - 11 December 1935); typed copy letter from Sarah Mellows addressed to the Minister for Defence (25 January 1940) representations on behalf of Sarah Mellows in 1940 and 1941 from William Norton TD, Alfred Byrne TD; references to her unsuccessful claim for compensation for monies spent by her on the maintenance of the crew of a German ship which had brought arms to Waterford in 1921; letters/statements in support of Sarah Mellows claim from Liam T.
