Subject Information File relates to unsuccessful application by Ellen Cloonan for a dependants allowance in respect of her brother Patrick Edward Cloonan found shot dead on 6 April 1921 having been taken by persons unknown, believed to be members of the British forces, from the house of [Lawrence Donohoe] the previous day. Patrick Cloonan served with the Irish Volunteers from 1914, including the week of 23 to 29 April 1916, and later with the IRA up to his death. The application was unsuccessful as Anne Cloonan, mother of Patrick Cloonan, had been awarded compensation under the Criminal Injuries (Ireland) Act, 1919 in respect of his death - awards in such cases under the Army Pensions Acts were precluded by Section 13 of the Army Pensions Act, 1923 and Section 11 of the Army Pensions Act, 1953. File includes: signed statements regarding Patrick Cloonan's service and the circumstances surrounding his death from Patrick Keane, Michael Athy, John O' Rourke and John Falvy; and reference to his two brothers service during Easter Week 1916 - Thomas Cloonan MSP34REF13515 and Michael Cloonan MSP34REF30612.
