Subject Information File relates to Mary Kate Doyle’s unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of her brother Thomas Doyle who was killed in an ambush near Bunclody (Newtownbarry)/Clohamon, County Wexford on 1 December 1922. Applicant claims that the deceased was assistant paymaster to the troops at Enniscorthy, County Wexford and that he was killed while travelling for this purpose when ambushed. Applicant deemed not to be dependant on the deceased. Noted in file that Doyle joined the National Forces on 17 March 1922. It is unclear from file if Doyle was a member of the National Forces. The Military Service Registration Board recognised service with the Irish Volunteers and the IRA only. The Army Pensions Board certified that death was attributable to service in the National Army. Mary Kate Doyle claims that the deceased had prior service in the British Army between 1916 and 1919. File contains: report from the social welfare officer detailing Mary Kate Doyle’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; Military Service Registration Board references from William Quirke, Mícheál Ó Ciardubháin (Michael Kirwan), Patrick Byrne, Nicholas Murphy; reference from Thomas Brophy; correspondence regarding the identity of deceased and another Thomas Doyle (2D51); statement of Thomas Crowley (number 57833); correspondence with County Registrar, Public Record Office and Department of Justice regarding attempts to obtain the inquest report into the death of Doyle; medical report for Mary Kate Doyle as part of her application for an award; certified copy of death certificate.
