Subject Information File relates to Edward Leahy’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: burning of RIC barracks and courthouse at Kinnitty (August 1920); outpost duty for attack on Clara RIC Barracks (June 1920); outpost duty for attack on Borrisokane Barracks (date not recorded); took part in the shooting of two (2) men named Pearson from Cullenstown; and attack on RIC in Birr (March 1921). Applicant also claims he took part in raids for arms, dismantled cars in his battalion area, collected taxes (March 1921); carried out a raid on Income Tax offices in Birr and did intelligence work for the active service unit (flying column) when it was in his area. During the Truce period applicant claims he attended training camps and went into Banagher Barracks. He states that he took part in an attack on Free State (National Army) forces in May 1922. During the Civil War, following the evacuation of Banagher Barracks applicant claims he joined the battalion flying column and fought against National Army forces at Bellmount (July 1922). He was captured [20 August 1922] and interned in Gormanston Camp until his release in January or February 1924. Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Leahy in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Lawrence Langton and J. Connolly; typed transcript (4 pages) of sworn statement made by Edward Leahy on 1 April 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statement made by Sean Robbins on behalf of Leahy; material relating to subject’s receipt of public monies through his employment as a labourer with Offaly County Council; and material relating to settlement of subject’s pension account following his death - partly closed.
