Subject Information File relates to Thomas Francis Burke's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Burke claims that prior to the Easter Week 1916 he was drilling with his company. Also claims that he re-joined the company upon reorganisation. In 1917 and 1918 he states that he took part in the usual activities. During the War of Independence applicant says that he took part in transferring arms; street patrols; armed guard duty; armed raid for Belfast boycott goods. States that in April [1922] he was sent as an organiser from GHQ and that he was involved in brigade organisation and training. Burke also states that he created battalion columns rather that brigade columns and that the 3 Battalion Column carried out an ambush at Kinnitty. Burke mentions that he was on the run. In the Truce period (12 July 1921 - 30 June 1922) Burke claims that he ran four battalion camps and that for a three week period he was sent with Brian McNeill to report information on 3 Western Division. Following the outbreak of the Civil War Burke states that he was in Banagher Barracks and that he took part in an attack on an armoured car at Ferbane, County Offaly; attacks at Ballinahown and Belmont, County Offaly; demoition of bridges. Says that he was arrested in July 1922 and that he was interned until April 1924.
