Subject Information File relates to Joseph Connolly's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 June 1922 and with the National Forces for part of the periods between 1 July 1922 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917 and took part in routine activities. During the War of Independence applicant claims that he was involved in County Offaly: attack on Clara Barracks (June 1920); [attack?] on house in Kinnitty (September 1920); raids for arms; dismantled motor cars in the battalion area in order to capture magnetos (February 1921); raid for dog taxes; appointed Officer Commanding (OC) of the Active Service Unit (Flying Column); OC ambush in Kinnitty in which two were shot and three wounded (17 May 1921); shooting of a spy (25 May 1921); shot two Pearsons and captured shotguns and ammunition (30 June 1921). During the Truce period Connolly says that he was in charge of the camp. Claims that he was involved in reorganising the brigade following the split (April 1922). Further claims that he organised a system of blocking enemy communications. States that he enlisted in the National Army in Birr, [County Offaly] in March 1922. Connolly later served as an Officer in the Reserve. He relinquished his commission on 10 July 1948.
