Subject Information File relates to Joseph Scully's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1919 and 11 July 1921. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Subject was awarded 1 and 7/12 years service for pension purposes at Grade E under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917 and that he spent one month in Mountjoy Prison for collecting money for the Dáil Éireann fund. States that in 1918 he took part in the destruction of Mountbolus and [Kelligh/Killeigh] barracks and that he was continously blocking roads. Says that he took an active part in the destruction of Clara Barracks, County Offaly. Mentions that he joined the Active Service Unit (Flying Column) in 1920 and was involved in the attack on Kinnity Barracks. Says that he burned Pearse building [home of the Pearson family?] in Cadamstown. Noted in reference that Scully was involved in an attack on British forces at Blueball in October 1920, attack on RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) patrol in May 1921 in which two RIC were killed and one wounded. Reference also states that Scully was involved in "shooting Pearson family and destruction of their home" in May 1921. Claims that he held the rank of Company Quartermaster from April 1917.
