Subject Information File relates to James Gleeson's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 11 July 1921. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. States that he held the rank of Second Lieutenant on both critical dates and that he was appointed in January 1919. During the War of Independence Gleeson states that he was involved in; burning of the evacuated Mountbolus Police Barracks; attack on Clara RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) Barracks (June 1920) - says that he was in the mill and fired a shotgun at the barracks; blocking roads; transferring rifles; raid on post office for telephone and mails; evicting an RIC man and family from his home; mobilised for the shooting of two spies. Mentions that he joined the Active Service Unit (Flying Column) in May 1921. States that he took part in the raid on Pearson's - "distributing petrol and setting fire to the premises and was at the taking out of the two men shot there" - says he was unarmed (June/July 1921). Claims that he was involved in the eviction of a policeman named Wynne from the district (referred to as a "tout"). In the Truce period applicant claims that he spent two weeks in training camps. Following the outbreak of the Civil War applicant claims that he assisted the Flying Column; blocked roads and carried dispatches.
