Subject Information File relates to James Cordial’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension. File also contains material relating to his successful application for a Service (1917-1921) Medal which was issued in May 1950. Archivist’s Note: James Cordial had three brothers who were also active with the IRA - Andrew (MSP34REF57678), Michael (24SP11688) and William (MSP34REF26398). James Cordial states that he joined the Irish Volunteers in Kinnitty, County Offaly in 1917 and served under the command of Michael Cordial (Company Captain) (24SP11688) and Laurence Langton (Company Captain). Attached to C Company (Kinnitty), 3 Battalion, 2 Offaly Brigade IRA under the command of Laurence Langton (Company Captain), James Coughlan (Company Captain), Joseph Connelly (Battalion Commandant) and Thomas Burke (Brigade Commandant) (MSP34REF31573), it is stated that the applicant took part in IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: guard duty over IRA men who had escaped from Mountjoy Prison – Sean Robbins, Martin Fleming (MSP34REF7770), Thomas Malone (MSP34REF55366) and Sean Mahon (MSP34REF56605) (April 1919); an arms-raid on Castle Bernard capturing shotgun, rifle and ammunition; an attack on a RIC patrol on Birr; arms-raid on home of Captain [Drought] capturing ammunition (July 1920); the burning of Kinnitty Barracks and Kinnitty Courthouse (August 1920); mail raids; road-blocking during an attack on Clara Barracks (June 1920); a raid on the Income Tax office in Birr; in charge of outpost during an attack on Borriskane RIC Barracks (June 1920); the capture of six rifles from British Army Captain at Kinnitty (September 1920); arms-raid on the home of Colonel Biddulph, Moneyguyneen capturing five service rifles and ammunition (September 1920); the dismantling of motorcars belonging to the “enemy” in the area (February 1921); an attack on a RIC patrol at Birr (March 1921); an ambush of a RIC patrol at Kinnitty (May 1921) and the shooting of members of the Pearson family who were “convicted spies” and burning of their home (June 1921). During the Truce period, James Cordial attended an IRA training camp at Streamstown, [County Offaly]. The applicant had no Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) service. James Cordial did not appear before the Advisory Committee as he was based in New York City, United States of America at the time of his application. File includes hand-written references in support of the subject’s claim from Joseph Connolly (Undated; 1950; 1953); Laurence Langton (Undated); Joseph Coughlan (Undated); Jack Hanlon (Undated); Michael Cordial (1950); Thomas Malone (Tomás Ó Maoleóin) (1953). Representations were made on behalf of the applicant by Thomas F. O’Higgins TD (1954).
