Subject Information File relates to Michael Cordial’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the National Army in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. It is stated on file that Michael Cordial had three brothers who were also active with the IRA – Andrew (MSP34REF57678), James (MSP34REF57339) and William (MSP34REF26398). The subject claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in County Offaly in March 1917. Michael Cordial states that he served as Company Captain, Kinnitty Company, Birr Battalion, Offaly Brigade, Irish Volunteers under the command of Commandant E. Morkan and Commandant Casey. As Battalion Quartermaster of 6 Battalion, 2 Offaly Brigade IRA under the command of Commandant Kelly and Commandant Joseph Connolly, it is stated that the applicant took part in IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: having “custody and safe keeping of arms in the Battalion area”; the burning of Kinnitty RIC Barracks; the seizure of dog tax money; arms-raids; the manufacture of munitions; the destruction of bridges; outpost duty during attacks on Clara Barracks and Borrisokane Barracks; ambush of RIC at Kinnitty when two policemen were killed and two wounded killed May 1921) and the shooting of two members of the Pearson family and the burning of their home after they had shot at IRA members (June 1921). During the Truce period, Michael Cordial was involved in organising work, the purchase of munitions and acted as Quartermaster in training camps in the Battalion area. One reference states that he was promoted to Battalion Vice-Commandant, 3 Battalion, 2 Offaly Brigade IRA. The subject enlisted with the National Army in April 1922 at Maryboro [Portlaoise]. Taking the pro-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), Michael Cordial served as a Lieutenant in A Company, 8 Battalion, 3 Brigade, Athlone Command and with 3 Brigade, Southern Command Cork. He resigned from the Defence Forces on 31 March 1927. Material on file shows that Michael Cordial married Josephine Cordial (née Egan) (MSP34REF62994) on 1 July 1936 in the United States of America (USA). File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Michael Cordial in support of his application; handwritten and typed statements regarding claimant’s service activities from Captain Joseph Connolly; Jeremiah O’Meara; [Eamon] Morkan; Major-General F. Cronin and undated unsigned handwritten notes [of evidence given by Michael Cordial before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924] and material relating to the settlement and closure of claimant's service pension following his death on 14 June 1972.
