Subject Information |
File relates to Michael Heaney’s successful application for a wound gratuity and for a Service (1917-1921) Medal which was issued in May 1954.
Michael Heaney states that he joined the Irish Volunteers in County Offaly in 1914.
During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), he was attached to C Company, 3 Battalion, 2 Offaly Brigade IRA under the command of James Coughlan (Company Captain), Joseph Connelly (Battalion Commandant) and Thomas Burke (Brigade Commandant) (MSP34REF31573).
On 20 June 1920, Michael Heaney was cutting trees for a road-block at Coolocrone, Cadamstown, Birr, County Offaly when he was fired on with a shotgun by members of the local Pearson family who were “hostile to the IRA”. The subject received gunshot wounds in the leg and rest and was treated at home by Dr. Regan for six months.
It is stated on the file that the IRA responded to the attack by burning down the Pearson’s family home and shooting dead two of the family.
The applicant left the IRA in the Truce period and did not take part in the Civil War (June 1922 - May 1923)
Michael Heaney was awarded a £30 wound gratuity in 1924 for the gunshot wound he received in June 1920.
File contains a completed application form and medical report. File includes hand-written references in support of the subject’s claim Joseph Connelly (1950) and Michael Cordial (1950).
