Subject Information File relates to Nellie Wallace’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 01 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Subject was awarded a Service (1917-1921) Medal in 1943, information held on file. Nelllie Wallace states that she joined Cumann na mBan in Newbridge, County Kildare at the formation of the branch in summer 1917 under the command of Mrs Kilbride (nee Kearns). In the 1917-1918 period, she claims that she took part in dispatch work; fundraising; bill posting and ‘Belfast Boycott’ work. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) as Branch Adjutant (or Branch Secretary) of Newbridge Branch, 2 Battalion (North Kildare), Cumann na mBan she claims that she was engaged in purchasing small amounts of ammunition from British soldiers; sending food to IRA prisoners in Ballykinlar Camp [County Down] and the Curragh Camp [County Kildare] and was arrested by the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) on 19 April 1921 and held for two days. Further stated that she was a dispatch courier between Newbridge/Naas and Newbridge/Kildare and delivered dispatches for Michael Collins (Director of Intelligence) to Barry’s Hotel, Gardiner Row, Dublin; Brennan & Walsh, O’Connell Street and 27 Dawson Street. Subject was also a dispatch link between Collins and Sean Kavanagh (24SP851) when Kavanagh was a prisoner in Newbridge Internment Camp. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War, Nelllie Wallace states that under the command of Miss Peg Daly (MSP34REF18912) she took part in helping 70 IRA prisoners escape in a tunnel from Tintown Camp [the Curragh, County Kildare] by providing wire cutters and chisels and carrying dispatches from prisoners in internment camps to Dublin (early 1923). Subject was arrested on 03 March 1923 and interned in Kilmainham Jail, Dublin and North Dublin Union until release on 19 October 1923. Following her release, Nellie Wallace claims that she opened a “hostel” in Newbridge Town Hall with her sister. They provided beds, clothing and financial aid to IRA men released from various internment camps until late January 1924. Further states that Miss Peg Daly and her sister Lucy Daly (MSP34REF18911) opened a similar venture in County Kildare. File includes reference in support of the subject’s claim from Marion Nolan (née Dolly Maher) (1942); Thomas Dunne (1942); Senator William [C-?] (1942); Patrick Keely (1942); Sean Kavanagh (1942); Peader O’Donnell (1942); Eilis Nic Eachnaidh (1942); Brigid O Mullane (1942) and M Lysaght (née Collins) (1942). File also contains a typed summary of sworn evidence made by the applicant before the Advisory Committee on 25 March 1942 and handwritten notes of discussion at interview with IRA verifying officer Sean Kavanagh on 19 November 1942 and T Harris TD on 20 January 1943. File DP5882 and 1RB3402 contains correspondence and material relating to applicant’s successful application for disability pension. She was awarded £120 per annum wound pension from 01 April 1935 to 28 February 1943. This was increased to £150 per annum from 01 March 1944 to final. Subject claimed that she contracted chronic bronchitis as a result of a bad cold and sleeping for several weeks on a floor without bedding during her imprisonment in Kilmainham Jail, Dublin in the Civil War period. File includes application form; doctor's note; references from Senator William Cummins (1936), Thomas Dunne (1936); service certificate and medical reports. File 1RB3402 contains references from Miss Frances Elizabeth O’Connor (1935); Miss Peg Daly (1936) and Brigid O Mullane (1935).
