Reference RO611
Title Record of 'Q' Coy, G.H.Q./A.S.U.
Scope and Content From 1913 onwards seamen and dockers had been involved in importing arms and ammunition into Ireland, primarily through Dublin, primarily for the Irish Citizen Army and Hibernian Rifles and were seen as instrumental in having supplied the weapons that were used in the 1916 Rising. In early 1919 I.R.A. G.H.Q. realised the potential of the seamen and dockers to supply weapons if they were properly organised. A specialist unit, ‘Q’ Company – G.H.Q. was formed and included seamen and dockers on both sides of the Atlantic, and further afield internationally. File RO 611 contains an account of the arms importing activities, and the names of ships and the routes that were engaged in the activity. The account is furnished in manuscript by John A. Kennedy, Captain ‘Q’ Coy. The file also contains a list of members of the unit and in the case of seamen the vessels on which they served.
