Reference RO605
Title London I.R.A. Overseas
Scope and Content The file contains a list of names of the London unit. This list was submitted to the Referee on 24 July 1936 by Sean Dillon. Mr. Dillon had been appointed as Secretary to the London Companies of the Old I.R.A. following a meeting in the Dolphin Hotel in Dublin on 18 January 1935. A cutting from the Irish Press, dated 19 January 1935 containing the notice is included in the file. London Battalion: The strength of the London Battalion was c. 83 all ranks. The list names each individual, includes an address in most cases and includes the caveat that it is not to be regarded as complete as the absence of full records and casualties among senior officers made the compilation of a definitive list impossible. The list does not refer to either of the critical dates. Activities: The file includes a typed document which provides a summary of the activities of the London Battalion over the following periods: October 1919 to March 1920; April to September 1920; winter 1920 / 21; spring to the Truce of June 1921 (5pp undated and unsigned). Activities highlighted include providing escorts for Sinn Fein speakers at political meetings; organising subsistence for IRA prisoners in London prisons, in particular organising visits and supplies of food; organising demonstrations outside prisons which entailed clashes with the police; arson attacks on strategic targets. The principal activity highlighted is that of intelligence work and the document states that this work continued after the Truce when most of the activities referred to earlier had ceased. The Battalion was also engaged in the provision of escorts and support services to the Irish delegates at the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations. At the conclusion of the document there is a quote attributed to Prime Minister Lloyd George, as related by Michael Collins to Commandant Dunne, Denis Kelliher and Sam Maguire.
