Reference RO604
Title North of England and Liverpool
Scope and Content The Liverpool Battalion file does not contain reference to strengths and locations on either critical period. The file contains a number of unit nominal rolls with names of members, and many of these show considerable variations in strength. There is one nominal roll entitled ‘Liverpool Battalion Roll Call’ which also gives locations of companies. The strengths and locations given here are taken from this nominal roll. The strength of the Liverpool Battalion was c. 370 all ranks. The companies of the battalion were located at: St. Helens, Earlstown, Wigan, and Preston. Material includes typed letter (dated 27 July 1936 2pp) signed by Martin Gleeson, Secretary, Liverpool I.R.A. ( M.S.P.) Committee. This states inter alia that a number of the men ‘…in addition to their normal volunteer activities..’ were also involved in ‘…services of a special character…’. The services are stated to have been chiefly involved in the acquiring of arms and munitions and their shipment to Ireland. A listing by name of those involved is provided and numbers seventy members, i.e. approx 18% of the battalion’s strength. File also includes a number of newspaper extracts in type from the ‘Liverpool Daily Post & Mercury’ relating to what are described as ‘Sinn Fein outrages’. These are dated November 1920 and May & June 1921. They mostly refer to the setting of fires and incendiary attacks, and clashes with the police.
