Title Scottish Brigade

Scope and Content File relates to the efforts of the Office of the Referee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 to ascertain the strength of Scottish Division, IRA on the first and second critical dates – 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 respectively – to assist in the processing of military service pension applications received under that legislation. The Scottish Division consisted of two brigades and details regarding the Division, the two brigades and component battalions and companies are contained on this file. 1 Scottish Brigade consisted of five battalions and 2 Scottish Brigade consisted of two battalions. There is no evidence on file as to when the brigades or the Division were formed. See also RO603A for further material relating to the Scottish Division. According to material on file the estimated strength of 1 Scottish Brigade was c. 2,500 on 11 July 1921 and c. 1,200 on 1 July 1922. The formation and locations of 1 Scottish Brigade were as follows: 1 Battalion (Glasgow and district) - companies located at North West Glasgow, Bridgeton, Govan, Baillieston, Uddingston, Clydebank, Anderson, and Cambuslang; 2 Battalion (Motherwell and district) – companies located at Motherwell, Wishaw, Craigneuk, Hamilton, Blantyre, Bellshill, Mossend, and Burnbank; 3 Battalion (Edinburgh and district) – companies located at Falkirk, Denny, and Stirling; 4 Battalion (Fife and Dundee district) – companies located at Greenock No. 1, Greenock No. 2, Gourack, and Port Glasgow; 5 Battalion (Dumbarton and Greenock) – companies located at Dumbarton, Dalmuir, Alexandria, and Renton. There is no evidence on file for the existence of 2 Scottish Brigade at 11 July 1921. An estimated overall strength of c.900 is given on file for the Brigade on 1 July 1922. The formation and locations of 2 Scottish Brigade were as follows: 1 Battalion – companies located in Dundee, Buckhaven, Lochore, Methill, Newmills, and Lochgelly; 2 Battalion – companies were located in Edinburgh, Leith, Portebello, Broxburn, Linlithgow, Winchburgh, and Bonnybridge. File includes: membership listings for component units and companies of the Scottish Division at various dates between 1916 and 1922; details of activities in the Division between 1916 and 1922; listing of 372 members of the IRB (Irish Republican Brotherhood), also referred to as the ‘Intelligence Branch’ arranged by location; details regarding those arrested in Scotland from March 1916 to March 1923; [partial] transcript (2 pages) of discussion held on 29 January 1945 with Eamonn Leo Mooney (MSP34REF14728), regarding his military service pension application and the Scottish Division; transcript (2 pages) of statement made by Patrick Murray regarding his service pension application and the Scottish Division; printed map of Scotland with locations of IRA units noted; letters, correspondence, notes, and memoranda, involving former IRA officers, members of the IRA Scottish Brigade Committee and officials of the Office of the Referee, regarding the compilation and submission of records relating to the brigades, queries arising from same, the formation, composition and workings of the Brigade Committee, and referring to military service pension applications of named individuals.
