Scope and Content Material relating to Irish Volunteer activity in County Galway during Easter Week 1916 including: transcription of statements made directly before, and copies of signed statements submitted to, the Advisory Committee to the Referee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 by former local volunteer members from various County Galway Volunteer Companies; typed and handwritten notes made relating to some of these statements; handwritten letter from the Ardrahan Old IRA to the Ceann-Comhairle, Leinster House, protesting at the lack of recognition afforded to their members regarding 1916 service for pension purposes and letter of acknowledgement from Ceann Comhairle; listing of men who took part in the attack on the Oranmore R.I.C. Barracks; a listing of Cumann na mBán members who gave service during Easter Week in Galway in 1916; a signed and witnessed statement by a former R.I.C. member relating to an attack on an R.I.C. patrol in Co. Galway; copy of a letter from Michael Athy, former Irish Volunteer Company Captain regarding the merits of a number of named individuals seeking recognition for claimed activity during Easter Week 1916 and the War of Independence and offering to collect medals on behalf of some of the individuals and their families; letter addressed to Sean McBride, Senior Counsel enclosing a copy of “Activities in Easter Week 1916 in East Galway and Pension Awards Based Thereon” issued by the Referee. File also contains copy spreadsheet listing 223 veterans of Easter Week service in Galway awarded pensions under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Veterans are listed by name and file reference number; Company, no of days service awarded, location at which service was rendered-including observation as to type of weapon used/ carried, whether shots fired by individual and other observations (9pp)
