Scope and Content File contains correspondence, memoranda, details of a named committee of three officials (Defence, Military and OPW), discussion papers, draft ceremonial order, outline of ceremonies and other material dealing with the recommendation of Mr Gerald Bartley, T.D., Minister for Defence and the decision of the Taoiseach Mr. Sean Lemass, T.D (1p dated 18 September, 1963) that the 50th anniversary of the foundation in November 1913 of the Irish Volunteers “should be celebrated in a special way by the Army”. As well as military ceremonial, consideration was given to the erection of a plaque and correspondence as to the proposed location of the plaque details liaison with the Board of the Rotunda Hospital, the Secretary of Capitol and Allied Theatres Limited (Ambassador Cinema) , Dublin Gate Theatre Company Ltd, surviving members of the Provisional Committee of the Volunteers and others. A decision to place the plaque, the wording of which is agreed, on the wall of the Gate Theatre fronting Parnell Square East is recommended. The ceremony and unveiling of the plaque by the President of Ireland Mr Eamon de Valera was set for Sunday 24 November 1963 at 1200hrs. This was postponed owing to the death of the President of the Unites States of America and rescheduled for Sunday 1 December 1963 at the same time. File also contains copy lease dated 4 May 1917 between the Governors of the Rotunda Hospital and His Majesty’s Postmaster General (for use of part of the site as a temporary GPO) and two drawings (13 pp), brief handwritten notes of the meeting on 25 November1913 in the Rotunda Rink citing reports as printed in the Freemans Journal, Irish Independent and Irish Times of the day(2pp), letters and cards of acceptance and notification of inability to attend from invitees to the 1963 ceremony, a cutting from INNIU newspaper dated 22 Samhain 1963 and a cutting from the Sunday Telegraph, dated 24 November 1963 reporting on the illness of Mr Bulmer Hobson.
