Title Miscellaneous papers relating to pre Truce activities 
Scope and Content File contains four separate documents as follows: 1. Typed copy letter from Diarmuid Eighceartaigh (O’Hegarty, Secretary to Government Executive Council) to Private Secretary Minister for Defence, dated 17 April 1930 enclosing a list of persons who passed through the First Aid Station in the Father Matthew Hall during Easter Week of 1916. He states that the list was prepared by Mrs Liam O’Gorman (nee Christine Hayes) and may be taken as “substantially correct”. List includes names of 32 patients, details of wound/condition in each case, the Volunteer Company and Battalion where applicable, with specific details given as to three of the patients (Leonard Senior and Junior and Sean Hurley). Included are the names of Red Cross men and Red Cross nurses, doctors from the Richmond Hospital, priests at hand for spiritual aid, the names of two persons arrested as spies and the fact that “about 25” British prisoners brought in by Volunteers were kept in the Concert Hall. The names of six Volunteer Officers who “were in and out” of the Hall are given and it is noted that the caretaker and daughter were “living in the top of the house”. 4pp. 2. Manuscript copy letter addressed to Mr. O’Connor (C.B. O’Connor Secretary Department of Defence), stamped and dated 24 February 1925, stating how documents required by O’Connor “in connection with the trial of Capt Murray” had been located by General Mulcahy T.D. (These documents (relating to use of Ford car 802) are not attached). An attached slip of paper dated 20 March 1924, is signed by L.T. Mac Cosgair (Cosgrave) and annotated “Received from General Mulcahy T.D. File of papers in [ ] Capt Murray”. (Note; Material likely refers to Captain James Murray, an Intelligence Officer, who was tried and acquitted by court martial in connection with allegations of ill treatment of prisoners and allegations regarding the death of Mr. Noel Lemass- see MA/AFO/44/Legal/1.) 2pp 3. Typed report on Defence Forces embossed paper titled “Damage to Property in England” addressed to Mr O’Connor, dated 10 May 1925 giving “definitive information” of operations carried out by the IRA during the period 19 February 1921 to 29 August 1921. Details include description of property, whether stolen, destroyed or type of sabotage carried out, location and name of property owner. Also contains details of three cases of fires, other burnings in early 1920 deemed not to be “official” jobs, the difficulties of the author getting information from named areas in England, other operations “evidently organised…..the work of a flying column as they happened on one day” and the theft of 242 detonators on 11 June 1922 in Yorks W.R. as the work of “Irregulars (Four Courts People”) (2pp). Typed report and carbon copy of same headed “Damage to Property in England”, addressed to Durham cases (11in total) between 26 March 1921 and 21 May 1921 and stating that the theft of cartridges and detonators from the Waterloo Colliery, Tomplenewsam, N. Leeds was “also done by the IRA”. The carbon copy in annotated “[ ] in safe”. (2pp) File also contains copy typed and handwritten material setting out in columns the following: the Date (of operation), Property damaged, Nature of damage and Name of owner and address where property damaged. The handwritten material is annotated in places. 14pp. 4. Note in manuscript signed by Peadar Macmathghamhna (MacMahon, Secretary Department of Defence) dated13 December 1926 as follows “Received memo by the Chief of Air Staff in Gt Britain on the Air Arm of Coastal Defence”. The note is written on the blank side of printed copy of AF 1519. Annotated “Safe” 2pp.
