Scope and Content File contains copy correspondence and letters in reply from the Secretary Department of Defence to the Secretary Department of Finance for sanction for the purchase of stated quantities of service medals (1917 to 1921) and tunic ribbons and internal Defence memoranda and notes for ongoing purchases from Ceannasai na Storas, Roinn Post agus Telegrafa (Post Office Stores) in the period 1963 to 1971. Copy report Service Medals-1916 and War of Independence outlines the stock of medals, situation re replenishment/dies for medals, miniature medals, recommendations for further orders or otherwise, protocol for replacement on a fee basis to holders and limited information on issue to recognised Medal Collectors on a fee basis. A recommendation is made for the purchase of “ten “1916 Medals and 1916 Survivors Medals, (3pp dated 24 January 1985). An order is subsequently placed for 12x 1916 Medals and 6 x 1916 Survivors Medals (1p dated 26 February 1985). Copy letter from the Controller of Stores, Telecom Eireann (1p dated 19 August 1985) seeking reimbursement for the sum of £58.99 for engraving of medals leads to copy minutes and notes in manuscript on the background and reason for engraving medals and an approach and decision for future engraving of medals to be carried out by the Military Authorities at Group 3 Stores, Clancy Barracks on behalf on Medals Section, Department of Defence.
