Title Electricity. Veterans of War of Independence who were granted free Electricity Allowance and are now in receipt of Old Age Pension-Correspondence with Department of Social Welfare.
Scope and Content File commence with a record of notification by telephone to the Department of Defence from the Electricity Allowance Section of the Department of Social Welfare on 7 January 1969 naming two persons granted the old age pension, which the Electricity Supply Board have confirmed are in receipt of Free Electricity Allowance from the Department of Defence. The Department of Social Welfare required Defence to terminate their free electricity allowance under their scheme for veterans of the War of Independence, so that eligible persons could be included under the Dept of Social Welfare’s scheme. The first notification lists 14 veterans , by surname, Christian name, postal address, Free Electricity Allowance (FEA) number, ESB District, Zone [Gr] [Cons] and month admitted ( for example Nov/Dec 68). The relevant Old Age Pension (OAP) number is included wef 25 April 1969. A backlog of cases is notified on a regular basis and the last such notification issued on 27 Iuil (July) 1973 listing 5 names etc. Later copy letters on file- commencing on 27 November 1974 deal with lists of veterans by County, with their FEA number, name and address who were formerly entitled to television licences from the Department of Defence and are now entitled to such licences from Department of Social Welfare (35 named veterans 8pp).
