Title Compensation claim of Miss A. Malone, Grantham Street, Dublin. Injuries received on Easter Monday, 1916.
Scope and Content File contains correspondence relating to the claim of Ann Malone, Carrig Rua, 13 Grantham street, South Circular road, Dublin for compensation in respect of a gunshot wound to the hip sustained on Saint Stephen’s Green, Dublin on Easter Monday 1916. Correspondents include May Malone (sister of Ann Malone), Elm Lodge, Whitworth road, Drumcondra, Dublin, Commandant Hegarty, secretary to the Minister for Defence, private secretary, Minister for Finance, and Colonel M. [Costello], Director of Intelligence. It is the contention of May Malone, writing to both Hegarty and the Minister of Defence, that her sister was walking in the area when an attack was made by Irish Republican Army in Saint Stephen’s Green on British officers, and that as a result of her injury she lost her livelihood as a draperess. Hegarty makes enquiries of both the Department of Finance and the Director of Intelligence to ascertain if the claimant had received any other monies in respect of this injury or if the applicant could be considered an ‘irregular’ (anti-treaty). The Director of Intelligence indicates that as a sister in law of Dan Breen the applicant is tainted with ‘irregularism’, and that monies had been paid to the Malone family in respect of Michael Malone who was killed during the 1916 rising. Letter dated 22 May 1922 from the Department of Finance informs Hegarty that no funds are available for compensation in respect of personal injuries sustained prior to 21 January 1919.
