Title Easter parades Dublin and Cork 1963-1969 part 1, Easter Parades Dublin and Cork 1969-1973 part 2.
Date December 1962 - May 1981
Scope and Content File contains ceremonial orders, copy letters of invitation, some original and copy invitation replies, memoranda, press releases, correspondence, copy parliamentary questions, and invoices pertaining to the Easter Sunday commemorations held in Dublin and Cork and administered by the Department of Defence. Ceremonial orders detail the programme of events, define the ceremonial functions of those participating, and contain administrative and miscellaneous instructions. (No ceremonial order for 1970). From 1963-1971 the Dublin ceremony took the form of a military parade and march past concluding at the General Post Office. The president, prime minister, government ministers, parliamentary secretaries, and attorney general formed the official guest list each year. In 1971-1972 correspondence documents the decision to abandon the military parade and march past in favour of a small ceremony at the General Post Office, attended by an tUachtaráin (the President), an Taoiseach ( the Prime Minister), and an ecumenical service in the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell square, attended by remaining invitees. This decision was seen as necessary due to the security situation in Ireland. Cork ceremonies throughout the period 1963-1973 were attended by one government minister and included a mass service at Collins barracks, and the laying of a wreath on the grave of Thomas Ceannt, at the detention barracks, Rathmore road, Cork by the attending minister. See 3/41020 for 1966 commemorations. Documents for the Cork commemoration relate to which minister will be in attendance, and accounts for refreshments.
