Title Certificates 50th Anniversary of 1916 Rising 1966 – Issue of Certificates for Decorations to Pre-truce Medal holders
Scope and Content File contains correspondence, memoranda and handwritten notes relating to the fiftieth anniversary of the 1916 Rising. Correspondence from members of the Old I.R.A and Cumann na mBan expressing views on the nature of the decorations that should be awarded to those who fought in the Rising and who have survived to take part in the fiftieth anniversary. A typescript summary of points of a discussion held between a Mr. Maguire, O Griofa and [P.] O Murcada entitled ‘1916 Survivors – Medal’ outlines that the medal should have the same obverse design as the 1916 medal, the reverse side should contain the legend ‘1916-1966’ and that the ribbon should be green and orange with a narrow white line in the centre (19 August 1965). File also contains a typescript correspondence stating that in order to qualify for the medal a person must have been granted a service certificate under the Military Service Pensions Act 1924-1934 (15 March 1966) for the period 23-30 April 1916 or a 1916 medal (4 October 1965). The engraving of recipient names on the Service Medal was not proposed and the aim was to issue the medals to the survivors before or during the Jubilee Commemoration period commencing on Easter Sunday 10 April 1966.
