Scope and Content File contains representation, memoranda and correspondence between the Department of Defence and the Department of Finance, initially dealing with consideration by and the direction of the Minister for Defence that the Third Schedule to the Connaught Rangers (Pensions) Act 1936 be amended to apply to pensioners under that Act the same scale of abatements which applied to military service pensioners following the enactment of the Military Service Pensions (Amendment) (No 2) Act, 1945. File includes a list of the six Connaught Rangers service pensioners in receipt of public moneys for 1945/1946 (other material shows that pensions were paid to a total of 30 individuals in the period 1936/1938 at a cost of £893 per annum); draft Heads of a Bill, observations by Department of Finance and subsequent amendments to the draft Heads of a Bill; copy Draft Memorandum for the Government: Connaught Rangers (Pensions) Amendment) Bill, 1948 and revised draft. File also contains copy interdepartmental correspondence, submissions and preparation of Bills and amending legislation in the Department of Defence and in the Parliamentary Draughtsman’s Office, with sanction/approval from the Department of Finance for same; copies of Budget matters relating to increases in allowances or pensions notified- as applicable to Connaught Rangers, military service pensioners and others; copy Ministers statements to Dail Eireann and Seanad Eireann including copy in type of extract from Dail Debates (4 July 1947 15pp), copy Dail Debates( 18 February 1960 1p) and debates in Seanad Eireann (2 March 1960 1p) and other material dealing mainly with increases payable to Connaught Rangers pensioners from 1948 to 1964. Correspondence also includes references to other bills and amending legislation to existing Army Pensions and Military Service Pensions Acts during the period.
