File relates to James Flaherty's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA from 1920 to 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service from 1919 to 1920.
James Flaherty was a former member of the British Army who joined the Irish Volunteers in September 1919 - Flaherty states that he had been in receipt of a wound pension for his British Army service (for which he also claimed to have served as a Lewis Gunner) which was terminated in 1920 due to his IRA activities. Flaherty served as a Battalion and later Brigade Director of Training as well as as a member of the Brigade Active Service Unit (Flying Column). During the War of Independence James Flaherty took part in attacks on British forces at Drummin, Clogher Cross, Red Bridge, Westport and Carrowkennedy - exact dates not stated. During the Civil War Flaherty took part in engagements against National Army forces at Clifden and Newport - exact dates not stated. He was arrested in August 1923 and interned until January 1924 at Newbridge, County Kildare.

Moane TD, and Michael Kilroy TD; typed transcript of sworn evidence given given before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 by James Flaherty (5 April 1935), Edward Moane (18 May 1935) and Michael Kilroy (10 June 1936); material including medical reports/certificates and social welfare reports relating to claimant's unsuccessful claim under the Army Pensions Acts, 1923 to 1946 in 1947 and to his successful claim under the Army Pensions Acts, 1943 to 1953 - subject's right eye was removed in November 1943 as a result of an injury received while on active service in 1921; and material relating to subject's wife.
