File relates to Patrick McLoughlin’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923, during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. McLoughlin also claimed unsuccessfully for the periods between 23 April 1916 and31 March 1920.
McLoughlin states that he joined the Active Service Unit in early 1921 and that during the War of Independence he was involved in activities in County Mayo including attacks at Kilmeena (19 May 1921) and Skirdagh (23 May 1921); raids on Newport and Westport towns (no dates given); burning Mulranny RIC Barracks (no date given); attempted ambushes at Burrishoole Bridge, Yellow River Bridge, Newfield Lake, Drimgar and Logjody [Bridge] (no dates given) and several raids for arms (no dates given). Subject also claims to have been Adjutant of the Company, which is corroborated by his reference John Connolly (12 August 1935).
In the Truce period McLoughlin says that he attended training camps at Sheeaun, Willford Lodge and Burrishoole House (no dates given). He states that he acted as guard at Ross House (Divisional Headquarters) and at Brigade Headquarters at Westport Workhouse (no dates given). McLoughlin claims to have been part of the Battalion firing party during this time and to have been made Second Lieutenant in February 1922, which is corroborated by his reference John Connolly (12 August 1935).
During the Civil War McLoughlin states that he was still a member of the Active Service Unit operating in County Mayo and that he was involved in activities including several attacks at Newport including one in September or October 1922. He also says that he took part in blowing up bridges at Killmeena, Burrishoole and Yellow River (no dates given); cutting the railway between Mallarany [Mulranny] and Newport (no dates given); cutting communications; trenching roads and dispatch work (no dates given for these activities).
