Subject Information File relates to Mary O’Donnell receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 31 March 1923, during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. O’Donnell also claimed unsuccessfully for the periods between 1 April 1917 – 31 March 1920 and 1 April 1923 – 30 September 1923. Mary O’Donnell joined Brockagh Branch of Cumann an mBan and was active in County Mayo during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. She states that she was O/C of the branch carrying duties such as making haversacks, attending to wounded men, carrying dispatches and providing food and accommodation for Flying Column [Active Service Unit]. James Kilroy TD mentions that her brother was killed during the Civil War [Patrick Mulchrone of Aughagowla, Westport, County Mayo died on 3 November 1922 having being shot by National Army forces at Brockagh, Aughagowla; file reference DP6228]. O’Donnell left Ireland in 1925 and was living in the United States of America at the time of her application in 1946.
