Subject Information File relates to Lilly Knight’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923, during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Knight also claimed unsuccessfully for the periods between 30 April 1916 and 31 March 1920. Lilly Knight joined Cumann an mBan in 1916 and was Secretary of the Westport District Council. She also claims to also have been Adjutant of the Aghagower Branch. Knight was involved in activities in County Mayo during the War of Independence and states that her house was used as a dispatch centre and that she carried dispatches for Duffy and Ring. Knight claims to have received information and passed it on to the Active Service Unit (ASU). She says her house was raided in February 1921 and that she had to go on the run. Knight states that she stored arms in 1921. She also saw that field dressing stations were set up at Cumann an mBan Branches. In the Truce period the subject carried out routine activities such as fund raising and sending parcels to prisoners. Knight continued her activities in County Mayo during the Civil War and states that her house was still used as a dispatch centre. She received information on planned raids and warned the ASU. Knight also conveyed ammunition to the ASU at Kilima a number of times and helped to clean and dump arms. She had custody of twenty-five rifles for a long period. Her usual Cumann na mBan activities continued throughout this period also. File contains material relating to Lilly Knight’s application for a Military Services Pension including; typed transcript of sworn statement by Lilly Knight to Advisory Committee (Military Service Pensions Act, 1934) on 9 March 1938; handwritten reference from Eamonn Moane TD (30 August 1935) and Michael Gallagher (12 March 1938); typed references signed by J. Connery (Margaret Connery) from Sean MacBride TD (24 November 1949) and representations from Michael Moran TD (5 May 1942 and 23 July 1942). File also contains material regarding subject’s applications for Special Allowance [disability pension], consisting primarily of administrative records; including medical reports (27 January 1950 – 10 May 1963) and representations from Michael Moran TD (9 November 1951 – 1 February 1963).
