File relates to Ciss Hoban’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan which, following an appeal, was successful for the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 31 March 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and the Civil War. Her first application was refused and she also claimed unsuccessfully for service in all other periods between 1 April 1916 and 30 September 1923.
Ciss Hoban states she joined the Castlebar branch of Cumann na mBan in 1915 and was engaged in routine activities including attending parades, drilling, collecting funds, organising dances and attending First Aid lectures. In March 1918 applicant and references state she was knocked down by RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) while attempting to rescue a prisoner (William Malone and Moran).
Throughout the War of Independence Hoban states she continued the usual activities. References and applicant state she attended a wounded man, Nicholson, for a week, nursed Jack Kenny for several days, carried dispatches, supplied food and clothing to IRA men in prison and to the Active Service Unit (ASU), conveyed arms and ammunition on six occasions and from April 1921 was forced to sleep away from her home due to raids and arrests.
In the Truce period her activities were apparently routine.
During the Civil War Period, applicant states she carried dispatches, attended First Aid lectures, continued collecting funds and sent food and supplies to prisoners.
