Subject Information File relates to Norah Hester’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1921 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Nora Hester (nee Duffy) had two brothers active in the IRA - [James] Duffy (1D29) who was killed in 1921 and Patrick Duffy (MSP34REF2908). Attached to A Company (Westport), 3 Battalion (Westport), 1 Brigade (West Mayo), Cumann na mBan, it is stated that the applicant took part in general Cumann na mBan activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: dispatch work; scout-duty; intelligence work; first-aid classes; fund-raising and helping to look after an arms dump. Following an IRA ambush of Crown Forces at Carrowkennedy [1921], the applicant states that she sheltered and guided several members of the ‘Flying Column’ (Active Service Unit) and succeeded in getting them “safely to the boats that brought them across the bay”. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), Nora Hester claims that she took part in similar activities. Material on file states Nora Hester (nee Duffy) married John Hester on 11 June 1941. File includes a copy of the marriage certificate. File also includes signed handwritten statements regarding subject's service from Edward Moane (1939). File also contains material relating to Nora Hester’s successful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts including: Application form; doctor’s notes; correspondence; medical report and handwritten reports from Social Welfare investigating officers regarding applicant’s financial circumstances (1953-78). Representations were made on behalf of the applicant by Myles Stanton TD (1975).
