File relates to Matilda Noone’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 31 March 1921 and between 12 July 1921 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1920.
Attached to the Newport Branch, 2 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade, Cumann na mBan, it is stated that the applicant took part in general Cumann na mBan activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: first-aid work; sheltering and billeting IRA men on-the-run; dispatch work; taking care of munitions and laundry work.
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), the applicant states that she continued with similar activity and once helped two IRA man escape from a Free State raid of her home.
Reference Michael Kilroy (MSP34REF839), former West Mayo Brigade Commanding Officer, wrote on 8 March 1938 in a typed letter that:
“As Shamore was an isolated district in those days, the ASU [Active Service Unit] as well as individual members of it often took a rest period in the village where they were received with ‘open arms’ as all the villagers were enthusiastic supporters of the cause. (It) is a big village divided in two by a large mountain river. There are six houses beyond the river more isolated than the rest which gave greater security. It was in those six houses more than any others that our boys were put up and attended to. Mrs. Noone lived at the time with her brother in one of those houses, it is there she rendered service.”
