Subject Information File relates to Maria Marley’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of her son Patrick Anthony Marley who died on 13 May 1921. Applicant made a further successful application for an award under subsequent Army Pensions Act. Includes application from Agnes E Marley, sister of deceased, for an award. Also includes unsuccessful application from Margaret Marley, sister of deceased, for an award. There are conflicting reports on file as to the circumstances surrounding his death. One reports states he was shot and killed at Partry mountains/ Aghagower, County Mayo on 13 May 1921 while being pursued by British forces. Another statement claims that he was accidentally killed at McNally's, Ardygommon, County Mayo. It is stated that a comrade (James Flaherty) was cleaning his revolver when it accidentally discharged. A third location is recorded as Ballygommon Wood, Westport, County Mayo. Maria Marley claims that her home was raided up to four times a week by members of the British forces and that another two sons Michael and Martin were threatened. Reference made to compensation of £1,200 and £230 having been paid. These sums were paid following claims of personal injuries as a result of raids by British forces. Martin and Michael were also each awarded £100 compensation. The sum of £1,200 was awarded to Maria Marley in respect of injuries sustained by her on 19 March 1921. File contains: reports from an Garda Síochána detailing Maria Marley’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; report from Investigation Officer, Westport; report from Customs and Excise Officer detailing Margaret Marley's circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; handwritten copy letter from Adjutant, West Mayo Brigade, IRA reporting the death and burial of Marley; certified copy of death certificate for Patrick Anthony Marley; certified copy of death certificate for Maria Marley; copy indenture between Maria Marley and her children concerning the lands at Gortnaheilta, Glenhest, County Mayo (1938); material relating to family partly closed.
