Subject Information File relates to Julia Sammon's receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan which, following a petition in 1951 to have her case re-opened, was successful for the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 11 July 1921 and between 1 July 1922 and 31 March 1923 during the War of Independence and the Civil War. Her first application and subsequent appeals were refused and she also claimed unsuccessfully for service in all other periods between 1 April 1918 and 30 September 1923. Julia Sammon and references state that she joined Cumann na mBan in 1917 on the formation of the branch in Aughagower, and was engaged in the routine Cumann na mBan activities including attending First Aid classes, and organising fund raising events. During the War of Independence the claimant continued these activities. In addition, as the only one in the village with a bicycle, she was instructed regularly by Edward Moane, J A Madden, Seán Gibbons and others to travel to Westport with dispatches or to collect them from Ned Duffy. She also regularly carried ammunition, generally either preceding or following local Irish Republican Army men, and on one occasion she states she purchased ammunition for the IRA in Westport. The village, and her house in particular, was used as a Brigade and Active Service Unit headquarters up until the Truce, and she was continuously engaged in dispatch work, carrying of arms, and in catering for and sheltering IRA men in her house. During the Truce period she was largely engaged in collecting funds and other routine Cumann na mBan work. At the outbreak of the Civil War she claims her house again became headquarters for local IRA and she was mainly engaged in dispatch work, carrying of arms and ammunition, and catering for the IRA calling to and staying in her house. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Julia Sammon in support of her application and additional handwritten and typed material in support of various appeals including a completed petition form to have her case reopened dated 10 August 1950; typed letter from Dr J A Madden to the Military Services Pension Board dated 26 February 1942; handwritten notes relating to discussion regarding claimant's service and activities held with various verifying officers including [Edward] Moane, (19 November 1940 - 16 December 1941) ; handwritten statements regarding claimant’s service activities from Edward Moane (28 September 1930 - 19 November 1944), Seán Gibbons, J A Madden 16/12/40; typed transcript of summary of sworn evidence given by claimant before Interviewing Officer [M J Gallchobhair (Gallagher)] on 17 December 1940; material relating to an incomplete application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts and material relating to the settlement and closure of claimant's service pension following her death on 28 September 1987 - partly closed for reasons of data protection.
