Subject Information File relates to John Mulchrone's unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Act, 1932 in respect of his son IRA Lieutenant Patrick Mulchrone. John Mulchrone was deemed not to have been dependent on his son at the time of the latter's death. Patrick Mulchrone died during the Civil War on 3 November 1922 in Mayo County Hospital from the effects of a gunshot wound received by him from National Army forces at Brockagh, Aughagowla, County Mayo the previous day. According to references on file, Patrick Mulchrone was shot in a house in which he had been sheltering by a National Army raiding party. John Mulchrone claims that his son was shot by a Captain Ruddy of the National Army in Gallagher's house in Brockagh. References also state that Patrick Mulchrone had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1918 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. File includes original handwritten material submitted and signed by John Mulchrone in support of his application; medical certificates in respect of Patrick Mulchrone; signed handwritten report dated 24 February 1936 from Customs and Excise investigating officer regarding the circumstances and means of the Mulchrone family and the degree of dependency of John Mulchron on his son at the time of the latter's death; In Memoriam card for Patrick Mulchone; signed handwritten statement regarding Patrick Mulchrone's service and death from Michael Kilroy; handwritten note dated 22 November 1935 signed by T. F. Markham noting contents of a discussion with [Eamon] Moane TD regarding Patrick Mulchrone's service and death.
