Subject Information File relates to Thomas Browne's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War in the service periods between 1 April 1921 and 31 March 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Applicant claims he joined the Irish Volunteers on 20 September 1914; paraded with arms on Easter Sunday at [Fornaugh], Westport, County Mayo under J McBride. During the War of Independence Browne states that he assisted in collecting money; raided houses for arms and ammunition; attended all parades. Claims in April 1921 he took part in an engagement with British forces at Clogher Cross, Westport; took part in an ambush at Kilmeena 19 May 1921 which resulted in the deaths of four IRA men, a Head Constable of the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) wounded and some IRA men taken prisoner by British forces. States he took part in an attack on British forces at Corrowkennedy 02 June 1921 which resulted in the deaths of two RIC Constables and a member of the British forces; the remainder of the British forces were taken prisoner. Browne states he joined the National Army 12 August 1922; forced to resign due to illness 10 April 1923.
