Subject Information File relates to Mary MacDonald's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1934 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA member Michael MacDonald. Mary MacDonald also claimed for compensation in respect of food supplied to [IRA] forces under the command of Michael Kilroy and for the billeting and supporting of invalided and active service forces at her home from 28 July 1922 to 20 December 1923 - outcome of this application unclear from file. Michael MacDonald's death on 13 February 1930 from Broncho Pneumonia and Tuberculosis was deemed to have been attributable to his service with the IRA. According to references on file Michael MacDonald served with the IRA during both the War of Independence and Civil War. His mother states that he took part in the IRA attack on British forces at Skirdagh, County Mayo in May 1921 during the War of Independence. During the Civil War it is stated that MacDonald served with an Active Service Unit in the 4 Western Division area and took part in fighting/engagements with National Army forces. It is claimed that he was captured by National Army forces, along with a number of other IRA members, on 7 March 1923, and subsequently subjected to a number of severe beatings by National Army officers/men while a prisoner in Claremorris Military Barracks. According to material on file MacDonald was then interned in Galway, Tintown Internment Camp and Hare Park before being released in 1924. It is also stated that he received medical treatment during his internment. Mary MacDonald states that from 1924 until his death, her son was hospitalised on a number of occassions and was arrested in [1928] by a Sergeant Kinsella of the C.I.D. in Castlebar, who she claims, had her home "thoroughly ransacked". File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Mary MacDonald in support of her application; medical certificates in respect of Michaerl MacDonald's illness and death; signed handwritten statements regarding Michael MacDonald's service from Michael Kilroy TD, J. A. Madden, P. J. McDonnell, Thomas Cleary, Joseph Baker, James Kilroy, Edward Moane TD, William Walsh and James O'Donnell; signed handwritten report dated 22 August 1933 regarding the circumstances and means of the MacDonald family and the degree of dependency of Mary MacDonald on her son at the time of his death; and original and copy typed signed correspondence (11 April - 23 June 1934) between the secretaries, departments of Finance and Defence regarding the amount of gratuity or award to be paid to Mary MacDonald.
