Subject Information |
File relates to Margaret Gibbons' receipt of a partial dependents’' gratuity of £85 (eighty five pounds sterling) in 1939 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA member John Gibbons.
John Gibbons' death on 2 September 1923 from Phthisis at Mayo County Hospital, Castlebar, County Mayo was deemed to have been due to his service with the IRA. According to references on file John Gibbons' had injured his leg while carrying a wounded IRA colleague, Anthony Keane, to safety during a round up by the National Army on 24 November 1922. It is stated that he again injured this leg while attempting to break railway lines between Mallaranny and Newport in County Mayo on 6 January 1923. Due to these injuries it is stated that Gibbons' developed tuberculosis in that leg. Although the leg was amputated he subsequently died. According to material on file Gibbons served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1917 onwards during both the War of Independence and Civil War.
File includes: original handwritten material signed and submitted by Margaret Gibbons in support of her application; medical certificates in respect of John Gibbons' illness and death; signed handwritten statements regarding John Gibbons from Michael Mangan, Anthony Keane, Pat Lavelle, John McNulty, Patrick Molloy, Laurence McGovern and Michael Kilroy; signed handwritten reports from investigating officers, Customs and Excise, Mulranny and Castlebar regarding the circumstances and means of the Gibbons family and the degree of dependency of Margaret Gibbons on her son at the time of his death.
