Subject Information Files relate to Annie Mary Mellett’s successful claim made for a military service pension in respect of service rendered during the period 1 April 1920 to 31 March 1923. Mellett was unsuccessful in attaining recognition of services rendered during the period 1 April 1916 to 31 March 1920, nor period performed during the period 1 April 1923 to 30 September 1923. Paperwork on file indicates that Mellett’s brother was a member of the Volunteers and after taking part in two ambushes (not detailed) left the area for Dublin. It is noted that Mellett assisted in making arrangements for him. Based on her interview with the Military Service Pensions Board in consideration of her case for a military service pension and details contained in her application form, Mellett’s activities post 1 April 1920 are described as attending Cumann na mBan meetings, carrying dispatches and providing food and clothing to volunteers. It is further noted that Mellett’s house was raided during the Civil War and at one time, a bomb was thrown through the window. Mellett’s case is supported by James Chambers, J.A. Tierney and Tessie Moane O’Brien. The aforementioned were connected mainly to the West Mayo Brigade during the service period under scrutiny. Letters of support from Chambers, Tierney and O’Brien are held on file. File includes: pension application prepared and submitted by Mellett, typed summary of sworn evidence given by Mellett to the Military Service Pensions Board in connection with her pension application in March 194. Files also contain paperwork regarding the progress of Mellett’s application and outcome.
