Subject Information File relates to John Joseph Flynn's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1919. John Joseph Flynn claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from 11 August 1918 having previously served with the British Army - no details of this service on file. During the War of Independence Flynn states that he served as a Drill Instructor and Battalion Training Officer with the IRA. According to information on file he took part in attacks on RIC and British forces at Headford, Kenmare, Firies and Castleisland during that conflict - exact dates not on file. During the Truce period he states that he served on the staff of 2 Kerry Brigade IRA acting as a machine gun instructor. Flynn joined the National Army on 10 April 1922 and states that he served as Officer Commanding 3 Battalion, 2 Kerry Brigade, National Army for an unspecified period. John Joseph Flynn served throughout the Civil War and retired from the Defence Forces to the Reserve of Officer from 31 March 1928. He again served during the Emergency (Second World War) retiring from 1 April 1946 having served at the rank of Captain.
