Subject Information File relates to Anthony Clarke's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920. File also relates to Anthony Clarke's [unsuccessful] application for an award under the Army Pensions Act, 1932. Anthony Clarke claims for activities during the 1916 Easter Rising were not recognised for pension purposes. During the War of Independence Clarke served as a Company Second Lieutenant and claims to have taken part in IRA attacks on British forces in County Mayo at Cloonkeen, [Glenioland] Kilmeena, Carrowkennedy, Skirdagh and Erris. During the Truce period Anthony Clarke states that he took part in IRA training camps and was involved in the taking over of British military posts. During the Civil War he served as an IRA Company First Lieutenant and took part in fighting against National Army forces. Captured in April 1923 he was subsequently interned until September of that year.
